“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
On January 23 (last Tuesday), the country’s eleventh school shooting of 2018 occurred. That’s important, and I am going to write it again. ON JANUARY 23 (LAST TUESDAY), THE COUNTRY’S ELEVENTH SCHOOL SHOOTING OF 2018 OCCURRED.
One shooting into a school bus resulting in no injuries.
Two shootings in elementary schools resulting in the self-inflicted death of the shooters.
One drive-by shooting at a high school resulting in one injury.
Three shootings in high schools resulting in two deaths.
Four shootings at colleges resulting in one death.
When I found out about the shooting on Tuesday, it wasn’t through a breaking news update on my phone or through the hushed murmurs of bad news being shared in a public space. It was relatively far down the page on the news website I was visiting, as though it were a report of a celebrity divorce or a mention of stock earnings. I am old enough to remember a time when school shootings weren’t an expected occurrence, to remember when any one of these events would have startled the country and held its attention for days.
These events should shock and anger us. Regardless of your feelings around gun control and the Second Amendment, each of us should be questioning if and how our individual actions influence our societies, the systems in which we are intertwined and their relationships to gun-related injuries and deaths. What are the next steps for us to take as followers of the One who came that we might have Life Abundant? That is not a rhetorical question; nor is it one to which I have a ready answer. But that won’t stop me from asking the question of myself and my friends. I pray that it is one which you will consider, too.
